2 Thoughts - New & 10%

#1: Better Versus New

Ever feel like you're missing out on results because you haven’t found the “right” person or system? I do this with fitness all the time. I think I'm not massively jacked because I haven't found the right gym situation that works for me. But it's not really the gym. It's the application of my gym membership(s).

Let's apply that to people. What's your payroll? What if we could get 10% more out of it by leveling up your leadership skills? If you spend $2M in payroll, that's an extra $200k of productivity. Wouldn't $200k more on your bottom line be pretty great as the year ends?

To get that 10%, you (and your key leaders) likely need to break through some leadership ceilings.

Here are some common leadership ceilings:

  • Lack of Clear & Actionable Direction: Great leaders help their team focus and get clarity.

  • Too many projects: There is a tendency that when a team/person is doing well, more work gets piled on until they break.  (See also: Peter Principle)

  • Inconsistent Progress Checks: The longer you go without checking on your people, the farther off course they can get. Consistent check-ins keep momentum in the right direction.

  • Time Underestimation: Often leaders, who live at 30,000 feet, underestimate all the details required that the people executing on the ground can see.

  • Assuming Your Way is THE Way: I can't say this better than the inimitable Jocko Willink.

Before chasing new, what small shifts in leadership can get the most out of what you already have?

#2: One Question to Ask Yourself

The final leadership ceiling I see is not giving yourself enough grace about how far you've come.  What area of your leadership have you grown in this year?
