2 Thoughts - Friction & Ownership
Jocko say:
Got a text from a loyal reader asking when my next newsletter was coming out. I said, "This week! What lesson has been on your mind lately?" He replied, "I'm learning that when I'm frustrated with someone I need to stop thinking about what they can do different and instead think about what I can do different. It all comes down to my leadership." Which made me think about my favorite Jocko Willink Extreme Ownership quote.
"Everything is your fault. The end."
#1: Frustration is data
Frustration is an opportunity to push to the next level. EVERYONE has an Achille's heel of leadership. Not everyone chooses that hard path of self reflection. Which is why you hit growth ceilings.
#2: Leader's go first
Teams don’t change because they’re told to. They change when the leader changes how they show up.
#3: One small thing
Behavior = motivation + ability + prompt. The easiest thing to change is the prompt. Pick one small time where your leadership consistently lacks, and change that in one small way.
RANDOM EXTRA STORY
I once made Jocko smile. I spoke at an event once right before Jocko got onstage. We were sitting in the green room together. Let's just say, he's not one for small talk, especially from a super nervous redhead fidgeting next to him. But don't worry, I eventually got him to crack and actually smile. It was terrifying.
