2 Thoughts - Coaching & Standards

Sportsball With the Lessons:

My youngest just played her first club volleyball tournament. They won eight straight matches, made the finals, and finished second.
It was intense, emotional (collective effervescence, anyone?) and the right outcome for where they are.

Because this season isn’t about trophies just yet, it’s about who’s leading them and what standards they’re learning to play to.  Put in the work and the wins will come.

#1: Pick the coach, not the outcome

What stood out wasn’t just the wins. It was the coach.  She coached footwork and hand position in real time. She cared deeply and held firm boundaries, even when they didn’t like it. Phones away. Be present. Stay engaged.  That mix - competence, care, and standards - is what raises performance. In sports. In leadership. In culture.

#2: Standards create culture

Most culture problems aren’t motivation problems, they’re standards problems.  When expectations are fuzzy or inconsistent, energy and performance drops. When leaders avoid discomfort, teams fill the gap with their own rules.

#3: Ready to build this with your team?

We work with leaders on communication, team alignment, and hiring - through keynote talks, half-day workshops, and longer-term advisory engagements.  If this sparked something, just reply to this email and we’ll talk.

#4: One Question to Ask Your Team

Where are your standards clear but inconsistently enforced?
