2 Thoughts - Quiet & Action
#1: Space for Action
This week, I’m reflecting on proactive vs. reactive leadership.
In my experience, CEOs are well aware of their challenges, but how they handle them makes all the difference—some take control, others let challenges control them. The key difference is making space to act.
A few examples from my world:
Leadership gaps: Reactive: Keep doing the job yourself or delay tough decisions. Proactive: Define the ideal team member, reach out to your network, and post a confidential job ad.
Hiring challenges: Reactive: Keep job postings up and hope for the right candidates. Proactive: Look within the team for potential to do more, ask top performers for referrals, call strong applicants immediately, or use local guerrilla marketing like flyers or road signs.
Leadership weaknesses: Reactive: Recognize your weak spots but avoid addressing them. Proactive: Commit to small, consistent improvements (read Atomic Habits), hire a coach and meet with them regularly.
Ultimately, it comes down to making space in your calendar and committing to action during that time. If you're always reacting, you can't lead effectively. Great leaders play offense, not defense.
#2: One Question to Ask Yourself
What's the one thing that, if I made a decision and took action, would make most of my other challenges easier or irrelevant?
