2 Thoughts - Training & Fighting
#1: Train Like You Fight
In 2005 I was stationed on the carrier to the right - the USS George Washington. Last weekend we took our daughters on a "nostalgia tour" of Norfolk, VA, where we got to see her in port. It was a very special moment and it brought back a lot of intense memories.
One of my major takeaways from military life was "Fight like you train, train like you fight."
The idea is this: you can't expect your team to show up and perform at the highest level without constant training, feedback, and more training. And the time for training is not the day you need them to show up. It's in the space between.
If you've found yourself sitting in a meeting with your team and thinking, "We used to do this thing. We already solved this problem. Why don't we still do it?" The answer is a lack of consistent training between execution.
#2: One Question to Ask Your Team
What internal process have we recently botched and what kind of training can we do make it go better next time?
